Which Hesiod poem gives the fullest early account of Pandora’s creation?

The story behind the answer

Hesiod’s poem Works and Days gives the fullest early account of Pandora’s creation. The poem describes how Zeus arranged for Pandora to be made and sent to humanity after Prometheus took fire.

Works and Days is a didactic Greek poem concerned with labor, justice, farming, seafaring, and human conduct. Pandora appears within its explanation of why suffering and difficult work exist in the human condition. Hesiod also refers to Pandora in Theogony, but Works and Days provides the more developed narrative.

Readers often associate the myth with a standalone story called “Pandora’s Box.” In fact, the earliest surviving literary version is embedded in Hesiod’s larger poem. Hesiod describes a storage jar, and the familiar box wording became standard much later through translation and retelling.
