Malchuyot names the kingship verses in the Rosh Hashanah Musaf Amidah.
Rosh Hashanah’s expanded Musaf prayer is unusual because it has nine blessings rather than the standard seven used on most Sabbaths and festivals. Its three central sections are Malchuyot, Zichronot, and Shofarot—Kingship, Remembrance, and the shofar.
The Malchuyot section presents biblical verses proclaiming God’s sovereignty. It reflects the traditional idea that Rosh Hashanah is a yearly coronation of God as king. Zichronot focuses on divine remembrance and judgment, while Shofarot connects the holiday’s themes to the sound and symbolism of the ram’s horn.
A common mix-up is treating all three terms as interchangeable. They are parallel sections of the same prayer, but only Malchuyot concerns kingship. The three sections are also linked with shofar blasts during the cantor’s repetition of Musaf, except when the holiday coincides with Shabbat.
