Which head coach led the 49ers to three Super Bowl wins?

Bill Walsh led the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl wins. He coached the team to victories in Super Bowls XVI, XIX, and XXIII, making him the head coach behind the franchise’s first three championships.

Walsh became the 49ers’ head coach in 1979, when San Francisco had finished 2–14 the previous season. His carefully designed passing attack, later known as the West Coast offense, transformed the team. Quarterback Joe Montana, receiver Jerry Rice, and a disciplined defense became central figures in the 49ers’ rise.

The first title came after the 1981 season, when San Francisco defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI. The 49ers then beat the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX and the Bengals again in Super Bowl XXIII. Walsh retired soon afterward, leaving the team with a 102–63–1 regular-season record.

A common mix-up is crediting Walsh with all five of San Francisco’s 1980s and 1990s championships. George Seifert coached the 49ers to their next two Super Bowl victories, in XXIV and XXIX.
