Which Harley-Davidson motorcycle appeared with Peter Fonda in the 1969 film Easy Rider?

The story behind the answer

Peter Fonda rode the Captain America chopper in the 1969 film Easy Rider.

The motorcycle was a heavily customized Harley-Davidson designed to embody the film’s counterculture road imagery. Its tall sissy bar, extended front end, stars-and-stripes paintwork, and low riding position made it one of cinema’s most recognizable motorcycles.

Captain America was a nickname for the custom bike, not a standard Harley-Davidson production model. The film also featured another customized motorcycle known as Billy Bike, ridden by Dennis Hopper’s character.

The surviving screen history of the motorcycles is complicated because several bikes were used during filming and later events. That uncertainty does not change the central identification: Fonda’s character, Wyatt, rode the Captain America chopper, while Hopper’s Billy rode the other principal custom Harley.
