The Twin Cam 88B replaced the Evolution engine in Harley-Davidson’s Softail range in 2000.
The Twin Cam 88B was a counterbalanced version of the Twin Cam 88 engine. Harley-Davidson used the “B” designation to identify engines designed for Softail frames, whose hidden rear suspension and rigid-looking layout required different vibration-management arrangements from other model families.
The Twin Cam 88 had debuted in 1999 on several Harley-Davidson motorcycles, but the Softail line received the related 88B version for the 2000 model year. Its counterbalancer helped reduce the vibration that would otherwise be transmitted through the Softail chassis.
The Twin Cam 88B should not be confused with the later Twin Cam 96B or Milwaukee-Eight 107. Those were later, larger or newer engine variants. The 88B specifically identifies the first Twin Cam version developed for the Softail platform.
