Which Hans Christian Andersen story features a magic trunk that can fly?

The story behind the answer

Hans Christian Andersen’s story featuring a magic flying trunk is “The Flying Trunk.” A young man receives the enchanted trunk and uses it to travel through the air to a distant land.

There he enters a palace and tells stories to a princess, hoping to win her affection. The tale combines travel, disguise, storytelling and magical transport, but its ending is less secure than the hero expects because the trunk is eventually destroyed.

Andersen first published “The Flying Trunk” in 1839. It is sometimes confused with “The Tinderbox,” another Andersen tale involving a magical object and a soldier, but the objects and plots are different. The flying trunk also belongs to a broad tradition of magical travel stories, including tales involving carpets, ships and other enchanted vehicles.
