Which Guatemalan volcano had a deadly eruption in 2018 that killed hundreds?

The Guatemalan volcano whose deadly 2018 eruption killed hundreds was Volcán de Fuego, commonly called Fuego. The highly active stratovolcano lies about 44 kilometers from Guatemala City, near the departments of Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez.

On June 3, 2018, Fuego produced sustained explosions, a high ash column, pyroclastic flows, and lahars. The fastest and most destructive flows swept down ravines and overwhelmed communities including Los Lotes. Ash also reached Guatemala City, where La Aurora International Airport temporarily closed.

At least 190 people were officially reported killed by late July, while hundreds remained missing. Because many victims were buried or affected by extreme heat, the final human toll was difficult to establish; local estimates were substantially higher. That is why descriptions often summarize the disaster as killing hundreds.

Fuego is sometimes confused with Santa María, another Guatemalan volcano associated with a catastrophic eruption in 1902. Pacaya is also very active, but the 2018 mass-casualty event identifies Fuego as the canonical answer.
