ABBA’s songs provide the score for the Broadway musical Mamma Mia!.
The musical was conceived by producer Judy Craymer, with a book by British playwright Catherine Johnson. It uses songs written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the two male members of the Swedish pop group ABBA. The show opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre on October 18, 2001.
Mamma Mia! tells the story of Sophie, a young woman on a Greek island who invites three possible fathers to her wedding. Songs such as “Dancing Queen,” “Money, Money, Money,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and “Take a Chance on Me” are arranged into the story.
The title is also an ABBA song, released in 1975. Mamma Mia! is therefore a jukebox musical, rather than a show with an entirely new score written specifically for its plot. The Broadway production ran for more than 14 years before closing in 2015.
