Which group won Best Rock Album at the 2013 Grammys?

The story behind the answer

The Black Keys won Best Rock Album at the 2013 Grammys for El Camino.

The duo—Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney—released El Camino in December 2011. Produced with Danger Mouse, the album blended the band’s blues-rock roots with a tighter, more polished sound. Its lead single, “Lonely Boy,” became one of the group’s biggest songs and helped drive the album’s Grammy success.

El Camino was not the only Black Keys winner that night. “Lonely Boy” also won Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song, giving the band three awards at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. The ceremony took place on February 10, 2013, in Los Angeles.

A common mix-up is confusing the album award with the single awards. Muse’s The 2nd Law and Jack White’s Blunderbuss were nominees for Best Rock Album, but the category recognized the complete album rather than an individual track. The Black Keys’ win also preceded their later 2015 nomination for Turn Blue.
