Which Greek sculptor created the original bronze statue of the Doryphoros?
Answer
Polykleitos
Answer
Polykleitos
Polykleitos created the original bronze statue of the Doryphoros, or “Spear-Bearer.”
The Greek sculptor designed the work in the 5th century BC, probably around 440 BC. The figure was an idealized male nude carrying a spear and was intended to demonstrate Polykleitos’ theory of harmonious bodily proportions, set out in his lost treatise known as the Canon.
The original bronze has not survived. What viewers see today are mainly Roman marble copies, including famous examples from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Roman copyists added supports such as tree trunks because marble needs structural reinforcement; the original bronze would not have required that same prop.
The Doryphoros is especially important for its contrapposto stance: one leg bears the weight while the other relaxes, creating a balanced opposition through the hips, shoulders, and limbs. Lysippos, Praxiteles, and Myron were also important Greek sculptors, but none is the canonical creator of this statue.
