Which Greek mythological figure is punished by Zeus after giving fire to humanity, linking his story to Pandora’s creation?

The story behind the answer

Prometheus is punished by Zeus after giving fire to humanity, linking his story to Pandora’s creation.

In Hesiod’s mythic sequence, Prometheus takes fire for mortals after a dispute with Zeus. Zeus then makes humanity suffer by introducing Pandora, whose opening of the jar releases troubles. Prometheus himself receives a separate punishment: he is bound, and an eagle repeatedly eats his liver, which grows back so the torment can continue.

The punishment story is best known from later classical treatments, especially the tragedy Prometheus Bound, traditionally attributed to Aeschylus. That play portrays Prometheus as a defiant benefactor of humankind and expands the list of arts he gives people. The Pandora story and the chained-Titan story are related through Zeus’s anger but are not identical episodes.

Prometheus is often mistaken for Hephaestus because both are associated with fire and craft in modern retellings. Hephaestus makes Pandora; Prometheus is the Titan whose theft of fire triggers the chain of events.
