Prometheus is the Greek mythological figure associated with stealing fire for humanity before Pandora’s arrival.
Prometheus was a Titan who sided with humanity in conflicts involving Zeus and the Olympian gods. In the best-known tradition, he stole fire from Olympus and gave it to humans, enabling technology, cooking, craft, and civilization. Zeus punished him severely for this defiance.
Pandora’s creation is commonly presented as part of Zeus’s response to Prometheus. The gods fashion and adorn Pandora, then she is sent to Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother. The story therefore links two famous myths: the gift of fire and the arrival of suffering.
Ancient sources do not tell the entire Prometheus-Pandora sequence in exactly the same way. Hesiod’s Works and Days emphasizes the consequences of Prometheus’s deception and Zeus’s retaliation, while later authors expand Prometheus’s cultural role. Even with those variations, Prometheus is the standard answer to the fire question.
