Myths describe her as an eternal virgin who remained apart from the romantic rivalries surrounding many other Olympians.

Hestia was the firstborn child of Cronus and Rhea, but Cronus swallowed her along with several siblings because he feared a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him. Zeus later forced Cronus to release them. Hestia became one of the Olympians, though mythology gives her fewer dramatic adventures than gods such as Zeus or Apollo.

Her worship had practical importance. Hestia received the first offering at domestic sacrifices, and a city’s public hearth symbolized its continuity. Colonists could carry fire from the mother city’s hearth to establish a new settlement. Her Roman counterpart was Vesta.
