Athena taught Pandora household crafts in Hesiod’s myth.
Athena is the Greek goddess associated with wisdom, strategic warfare, and skilled crafts. In the account of Pandora’s creation, she teaches Pandora practical abilities, helping make her a convincing and accomplished figure rather than merely an unfinished human shape.
Hesiod describes several gods contributing to Pandora’s presentation. Hephaestus fashions her, Athena teaches her crafts, and Aphrodite gives her beauty or grace. Hermes contributes qualities connected with speech and deception. These roles explain why the name Pandora means “all-gifted.”
The myth should not be confused with later stories in which Athena is the sole creator or protector of a human heroine. Here, she is one participant in a collective divine construction designed by Zeus as a punishment for humanity.
