Hephaestus physically shaped Pandora from earth in Hesiod’s creation account.
Hesiod describes Zeus ordering Hephaestus to make a woman from earth. Hephaestus was the divine smith and craftsman, so forming Pandora fits his usual mythological role as the maker of extraordinary objects, armor, and automata. The other gods then supplied different gifts or characteristics, making Pandora a composite divine creation.
This detail is often confused with the god responsible for the overall plan. Zeus initiates the creation as punishment connected to Prometheus, while Hephaestus performs the shaping. Hermes also has a role in the story, but he is associated with giving Pandora speech or a deceptive nature in Hesiod’s account, not with molding her body. Thus the maker and the planner are different figures.
