Hephaestus is the Greek god said to have shaped Pandora from clay or earth in the standard myth.
Hesiod describes Pandora as fashioned from earth at Zeus’s command. Later artistic and explanatory traditions identify Hephaestus, the divine smith and craftsman, as the god who shaped her. This assignment suits his role as the maker of weapons, armor, and other objects for the gods.
Pandora’s creation is collaborative rather than the work of Hephaestus alone. Other deities contribute qualities, clothing, ornaments, or behavior. Hermes, for example, is associated with giving her a deceptive or persuasive nature in the literary tradition. Athena and Aphrodite are also connected with aspects of her presentation in later summaries.
The most precise answer to the question of who formed her is Hephaestus. A common mistake is to answer Zeus because Zeus ordered Pandora’s creation. Zeus directed the punishment, while Hephaestus performed the crafting in the familiar mythological account.
