Which Greek god is said to have fashioned Pandora from earth?

The story behind the answer

Hephaestus is said to have fashioned Pandora from earth in Greek mythology.

Hesiod describes Zeus ordering Hephaestus to make a woman’s form from earth. Hephaestus is the divine smith and craftsman, so the task fits his role as the god who creates objects, weapons, and elaborate works for the Olympians. Pandora’s construction gives the myth a crafted, artificial beginning.

Other gods then contribute qualities or adornments. Athena teaches Pandora needlework and other crafts, while Aphrodite gives beauty and the Graces provide attractiveness in later descriptions. Hermes supplies persuasive speech and a deceptive character in Hesiod’s account. The gods’ combined contributions explain the name Pandora, “all-gifted.”

Hephaestus should not be confused with Prometheus, who is linked to the theft of fire. Prometheus is a Titan and benefactor of humanity; Hephaestus is an Olympian artisan. The two figures occupy different roles in the story’s explanation of how humans acquired both fire and suffering.
