Athena is the Greek god associated with giving Pandora her skill in weaving.
In the tradition surrounding Pandora, the gods contribute different qualities to the woman created at Zeus’s command. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and crafts, is associated with teaching or clothing Pandora and with textile skill in later summaries of the myth. This links Pandora to one of ancient Greece’s most important domestic and artistic crafts.
The exact distribution of gifts varies among ancient and later sources. Hesiod’s main narrative emphasizes Pandora’s adornment and the actions of several gods rather than giving every later popular detail in one standardized list. As a result, retellings sometimes attribute different gifts to different deities.
Athena’s association is especially plausible within Greek myth because weaving is repeatedly connected with her cult and with stories such as Arachne’s. It should not be confused with Aphrodite’s association with beauty or Hermes’s association with persuasive speech and deceit.
