Hephaestus is the Greek deity associated with crafting Pandora’s body from earth in Hesiod’s myth. Hephaestus was the Olympian god of fire, metalworking, smiths, and craftsmanship.
In Works and Days, Zeus commands Hephaestus to make a woman from earth. Other gods then contribute qualities, clothing, ornaments, or skills, creating the figure named Pandora. This division of labor reflects Hephaestus’s mythological role as the divine artisan.
Hephaestus is often identified with the Roman god Vulcan. He should not be confused with Prometheus, whose story concerns stealing fire, or Hermes, who is associated with bringing Pandora to Epimetheus. Ancient Greek accounts differ in how they describe Pandora’s gifts, but Hephaestus’s craftsmanship remains a central part of the creation episode.
