In Hesiod’s creation story, Athena gave Pandora her clothing and adornments.
After Zeus ordered the creation of Pandora, different gods contributed qualities or skills to the first woman. Athena, the goddess associated with wisdom, warfare, and crafts, dressed her and taught her handiwork. This detail appears in Hesiod’s Theogony, one of the earliest surviving literary accounts of the myth.
Other gods also play roles in the construction of Pandora. Hephaestus shapes her from earth, while Aphrodite gives her beauty and Hermes gives her a deceptive nature and a voice. These contributions make Pandora a composite divine creation rather than the work of a single god.
The myth is often simplified in modern summaries, which may assign all gifts to Zeus or describe Pandora as made only by Hephaestus. Hesiod’s version instead emphasizes a coordinated act by several Olympian deities, each supplying a different trait.
