Which Greek author first recorded the Pandora myth in the poem Theogony?

The story behind the answer

Hesiod first recorded the Pandora myth in the poem Theogony.

Hesiod was an early Greek poet generally dated to the eighth or seventh century BCE. His Theogony presents the genealogy and origins of the gods, including the punishment of humanity after Prometheus’s theft of fire. Pandora’s creation appears there in a relatively brief form.

Hesiod later gives a fuller treatment in Works and Days. That poem explains the gifts given to Pandora, her marriage to Epimetheus, and the opening of the storage jar that releases hardships. The two accounts overlap but are not identical in length or emphasis.

Homer is sometimes named in general discussions of Greek mythology, but the surviving Pandora passages are associated with Hesiod, not Homer. The story’s early literary evidence therefore comes from Hesiodic poetry rather than from the Homeric epics.
