Which great ape is the largest living primate?

The story behind the answer

The gorilla is the largest living primate and inhabits the tropical forests of equatorial Africa.

Gorillas are divided into two species, the western gorilla and the eastern gorilla, with several recognized subspecies. They are primarily herbivorous, eating leaves, stems, shoots, fruit, and bark. Their large size is supported by a high-fiber diet and a highly specialized digestive system.

Most gorillas live in stable family groups led by a dominant silverback, an adult male whose back hair turns gray with age. Groups communicate through vocalizations, gestures, chest beats, and facial expressions.

Mountain gorillas live in high-altitude forests, while western lowland gorillas occupy lowland rainforest. Gorillas are not monkeys in everyday classification: they are apes, and they lack tails.
