Wimbledon was Rafael Nadal’s first Grand Slam tournament title outside the French Open.
Nadal won the 2008 Wimbledon men’s singles final by defeating five-time defending champion Roger Federer 6–4, 6–4, 6–7, 6–7, 9–7. The victory was Nadal’s fifth major title and his first on grass, ending Federer’s 65-match winning streak on that surface.
The result was especially significant because Nadal had lost the previous two Wimbledon finals to Federer. By winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season, he completed the Channel Slam, a term for taking both tournaments in one year. Nadal later added the Australian Open and US Open to complete his career Grand Slam.
