The US Open is the fourth and last Grand Slam tournament played in the annual tennis calendar. It follows the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon.
The tournament is generally staged from late August into early September, with the final weekend traditionally associated with the United States Labor Day holiday. Unlike the other three Grand Slam events, which use hard, clay, and grass respectively, the US Open has been played on hard courts since 1978.
Its place in the calendar makes it the season’s final major opportunity for players to win a Grand Slam singles title. The event is held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, New York City.
The order is easy to confuse because the Australian Open begins the Grand Slam year, while Wimbledon is the most prominent midsummer major. The US Open’s late-summer timing makes it the final stop in the traditional four-event sequence.
