Which Gothic novel is set in Transylvania?

The story behind the answer

Which Gothic novel is set in Transylvania? Bram Stoker's Dracula is the canonical answer. The 1897 novel opens with the English solicitor Jonathan Harker traveling to Count Dracula's castle in Transylvania.

Transylvania is a historical region in present-day central Romania, and Stoker uses its mountains, forests, castles, and folklore to create an atmosphere of isolation and supernatural danger. The novel later moves beyond the region, particularly to England, where Dracula's threat reaches Mina Murray, Lucy Westenra, and their allies.

Readers sometimes associate every vampire story with Transylvania, but the connection is especially strong because of Dracula's lasting cultural influence. The fictional Count Dracula is not simply a biography of Vlad the Impaler, although Stoker may have borrowed the name and some historical associations. The other listed novels have different settings: Frankenstein moves across Europe and the Arctic, while The Hunchback of Notre Dame centers on Paris.
