Answer
Wuthering Heights
Which Gothic novel features the character Heathcliff? Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights features Heathcliff. Published in 1847 under Brontë’s pen name, Ellis Bell, the novel is set among two Yorkshire estates: Wuthering Heights, home of the Earnshaw family, and Thrushcross Grange, associated with the Lintons.
Heathcliff arrives at Wuthering Heights as an orphan brought home by Mr Earnshaw. He develops an intense bond with Catherine Earnshaw, but social pressure and class prejudice separate them. Catherine chooses to marry Edgar Linton, and Heathcliff eventually returns wealthy and determined to take revenge on those he believes have wronged him. His obsession, cruelty, and suffering make him one of English literature’s most recognizable antiheroes.
The novel is often classified as both Gothic fiction and Romantic tragedy. Its haunted atmosphere, isolated moors, emotional violence, and hints of the supernatural distinguish it from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, another major nineteenth-century novel that is sometimes confused with it. Wuthering Heights was Emily Brontë’s only novel.
