bar-headed goose
Answer
bar-headed goose
The bar-headed goose is the goose species known for migrating over the Himalayas at extreme altitudes.
It breeds around high-altitude lakes on the Tibetan Plateau and in parts of Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and Russia, then flies south to wintering grounds in India and elsewhere in South Asia. Its Himalayan crossing can be completed in a single flight lasting as little as seven hours.
The bird’s reputation as a Himalayan high-flyer is supported by tracking studies, although older stories that it routinely flies over Mount Everest are probably exaggerated. GPS research found that most tagged geese used valleys and mountain passes below about 5,800 metres; a small number reached higher elevations, with one recorded at 7,290 metres.
Bar-headed geese are specially adapted to thin air. Their haemoglobin binds oxygen efficiently, and their respiratory system, heart, and flight muscles help extract and use oxygen in hypoxic conditions. The greylag goose is a related species that may share parts of the region, but it is not the famous Himalayan migrant in this question.
