Which goddess was the mother of Apollo and Artemis?

The story behind the answer

Which goddess was the mother of Apollo and Artemis? Leto.

Leto was the Titan-born goddess who became the mother of the divine twins Apollo and Artemis. Zeus was their father. In the best-known version of the myth, Hera’s jealousy made it difficult for Leto to find a safe place to give birth, until the island of Delos offered her refuge. Apollo and Artemis became two of the most important gods in the Greek pantheon.

Leto was the daughter of the Titans Coeus and Phoebe and the sister of Asteria. Ancient worship often treated her as a protective mother and kourotrophic deity, especially in conjunction with her children. Delos became a major sacred center because it was associated with the birth of Apollo, while Leto also had an important cult in Lycia.

Another famous story concerns Niobe, who boasted that she was a superior mother because she had more children than Leto. Apollo and Artemis killed Niobe’s children in punishment, a myth emphasizing the danger of insulting divine dignity. Leto’s Roman equivalent was Latona. She is sometimes confused with Rhea, another Titan mother, but Rhea was the mother of Zeus and several older Olympians.
