Which goddess mended the sky with five-colored stones?

The story behind the answer

Which goddess mended the sky with five-colored stones? Nüwa mended the sky with five-colored stones.

Nüwa is a mother goddess, culture hero, and sometimes one of the Three Sovereigns in Chinese mythology. She is also credited with creating humanity, often by shaping people from yellow earth or mud. Her role as both creator and repairer makes her one of the tradition’s most important divine figures.

In the Huainanzi, a cosmic catastrophe breaks the pillars supporting Heaven and causes floods, fires, and devastation. Nüwa melts stones of five colors to patch the damaged sky. She also cuts the legs from a giant tortoise to serve as replacement supports, kills a black dragon, and uses reeds and ashes to control the floodwaters.

The story appears in several ancient sources, including the Liezi and the Songs of Chu, so details vary. Gonggong is often blamed for the heavenly collapse after a disastrous conflict. Fuxi is Nüwa’s frequent brother and husband in later traditions; Mazu, Chang’e, and Xi Wangmu are distinct goddesses.
