Apollo restored Hector’s strength after he was wounded in the Iliad. In Book 15, Hector has been struck by a stone thrown by Ajax and is left gasping, weakened, and vomiting blood. Zeus orders Apollo to revive him and send him back into battle.
Apollo approaches Hector, encourages him, and gives him renewed strength and courage. The god’s intervention is more than ordinary medical healing: Hector’s pain and exhaustion are removed, allowing him to resume command of the Trojan assault. Apollo also carries Zeus’s aegis before Hector, helping drive the Achaeans back.
The episode is part of the Iliad’s shifting divine support. Apollo strongly favors Troy and repeatedly protects its defenders, while Athena and Hera generally aid the Greeks. Hector’s recovery helps the Trojans reach the Achaean ships, setting up the events that lead to Patroclus entering battle in Achilles’ armor.
A common mix-up is to credit Zeus, because Zeus orders the revival, or Ares, another war god associated with battle. But Apollo is the god who personally restores Hector’s strength.
