Which god is the father of Thor?

The story behind the answer

Odin is the father of Thor in Norse mythology. Thor is described as the son of Odin and Jörð, the personification or goddess associated with Earth.

Thor is one of the most prominent gods in Germanic tradition. He governs or influences thunder, storms, strength, protection, fertility, and agricultural life. His weapon is Mjölnir, the hammer that returns to his hand after being thrown and is used to defend the gods and humans from giants and other hostile beings.

Thor’s family connections can cause confusion because Norse mythology gives him several half-siblings. Odin is also father of Baldr, Víðarr, Váli, and other gods in different traditions. Thor’s mother is Jörð, while his wife is Sif, and he has children including Þrúðr, Magni, and Móði.

The weekday Thursday preserves Thor’s name: Old English Þunresdæg meant “Thor’s day.” In wider Germanic tradition, related forms include Donar, Thunor, and Thunar. Marvel’s Thor also calls Odin his father, but the modern fictional character draws selectively from these older myths.
