Led by their king Alaric I, the Visigoths entered Rome on 24 August 410 and plundered the city for three days. Rome was no longer the Western Empire’s administrative capital—Milan and later Ravenna held that role—but it remained the empire’s symbolic and religious center.

The sack followed years of tension between Alaric’s Goths and the Roman government. The Visigoths had originally entered the empire as federated allies, but disputes over pay, land, military service, and political recognition led to repeated conflict. After failed negotiations with Emperor Honorius, Alaric besieged Rome three times before capturing it.

The Huns were sometimes involved in Roman campaigns against Gothic forces, while the Vandals sacked Rome later, in 455. The Ostrogoths captured Rome in 546, but they were not responsible for the famous sack of 410. The event shocked contemporaries and became a major symbol of the Western Roman Empire’s weakening.
