Which Germanic king did Julius Caesar defeat in 58 BC?

The story behind the answer

Julius Caesar defeated the Germanic king Ariovistus in 58 BC during the early campaigns of the Gallic Wars. Ariovistus was a leader of the Suebi and commanded a coalition of Germanic peoples who had settled in parts of Gaul.

Before Caesar’s intervention, Ariovistus had helped the Sequani defeat their rivals, the Aedui. He then demanded territory and hostages, alarming the Aedui, who were allies of Rome. Caesar presented his intervention as the defense of Rome’s friends, while also gaining a strategic reason to expand Roman power in Gaul.

The decisive confrontation was the Battle of Vosges, also called the Battle of Vesontio, fought in 58 BC. Caesar’s Roman army defeated Ariovistus’s forces and drove the survivors back across the Rhine. The victory helped establish Caesar’s reputation as a commander and removed a major Germanic threat from eastern Gaul.

Ariovistus is sometimes confused with Vercingetorix, another major opponent of Caesar. Vercingetorix was a Gallic leader defeated much later, at the siege of Alesia in 52 BC.
