Which German writer created Lulu, the central character in the 1929 film Pandora’s Box?
Answer
Frank Wedekind
Answer
Frank Wedekind
Frank Wedekind created Lulu, the central character in the 1929 film Pandora’s Box.
Frank Wedekind was a German playwright whose work often challenged conventional morality and social respectability. Lulu first appeared in his plays Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box. These dramas portray her as a powerful, elusive figure whose relationships expose the desires, hypocrisy, and violence of the society around her.
G. W. Pabst’s 1929 film combined material from both plays. The movie therefore did not invent Lulu, although Louise Brooks’s performance gave the character a new and internationally famous visual identity. Wedekind’s theatrical Lulu is the literary source behind that screen interpretation.
Wedekind is sometimes grouped with later German dramatists such as Bertolt Brecht, but they were different writers from different generations and are associated with different theatrical movements. Pandora’s Box is connected specifically to Wedekind’s Lulu plays, not to a direct adaptation of Hesiod’s Greek poem.
