Which German Romantic painter created the series 'The Times of Day'?

The story behind the answer

The German Romantic painter who created the series The Times of Day was Philipp Otto Runge.

Runge planned The Times of Day, or Tageszeiten, as four monumental works representing Morning, Day, Evening, and Night. He imagined them as part of a larger total artwork combining painting, poetry, music, and architecture. The project was intended for a Gothic chapel and aimed to express spiritual ideas through symbolic landscapes rather than conventional religious iconography.

Runge worked on the concept for about eight years, but his early death prevented the complete painted cycle. Morning survives in major painted versions, while several of the other images are known chiefly through drawings and prints. The series is notable for its mystical symbolism, luminous color, plants, and cosmic sense of nature.

Runge was born in 1777 and died in Hamburg in 1810, aged 33. He is often discussed alongside Caspar David Friedrich, but Friedrich did not create this series.
