Which German playwright created Lulu, the central character linked to Pandora's Box?
Answer
Frank Wedekind
Answer
Frank Wedekind
Frank Wedekind created Lulu, the central character linked to Pandora's Box.
Wedekind developed Lulu in the plays Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box. Together, these dramas portray a sexually independent woman whose relationships expose hypocrisy, exploitation, and social double standards. The character became one of the most controversial creations in German-language theatre.
Wedekind was born Benjamin Franklin Wedekind in Hanover in 1864 and died in Munich in 1918. His writing frequently challenged bourgeois morality and conventional theatrical form. Lulu was especially influential because she can be read both as an agent who exercises power and as a person controlled and punished by the society around her.
G. W. Pabst later combined material from both plays in his 1929 film Pandora's Box, starring Louise Brooks. Alban Berg also adapted the Lulu dramas into the opera Lulu, making Wedekind's character important in both cinema and twentieth-century music.
