Which German dish combines sausage with curry ketchup?

The story behind the answer

The German dish that combines sausage with curry ketchup is currywurst.

Currywurst is typically made with sliced pork sausage covered in a curry-seasoned ketchup or tomato-based sauce, often finished with a dusting of curry powder. It is usually served as a quick meal with French fries or a bread roll, though recipes differ across Germany.

The dish is strongly associated with postwar Berlin. Herta Heuwer is widely credited with creating it in 1949 at a food stand in West Berlin’s Charlottenburg district. According to the familiar account, she obtained ketchup and curry powder from British soldiers and combined them into a sauce for grilled sausage.

Currywurst is not one single standardized recipe: Berlin versions, for example, can differ from those in Hamburg or the Ruhr area, and beef or vegetarian sausages are also available. The name can therefore describe a family of preparations, but the defining pairing remains sausage and curry-flavored sauce.
