Which German city hosts the largest carnival parade on Rosenmontag? Cologne.
Cologne hosts Germany’s largest Rosenmontag, or Rose Monday, carnival parade. The procession is the high point of Cologne Carnival, bringing floats, marching groups, brass bands and costumed revelers through the city center.
Cologne’s modern carnival tradition was reorganized in the nineteenth century, with the first organized Rose Monday parade held in 1823. The event combines older pre-Lenten customs with civic pageantry and political satire. Floats commonly lampoon national politicians, international leaders and major news stories from the previous year.
The parade is not the same as the opening of street carnival, which begins on Weiberfastnacht, the Thursday before Rose Monday. Rosenmontag comes near the end of the carnival season, two days before Ash Wednesday, and is marked by the ceremonial throwing of sweets and flowers into the crowd.
Mainz and Düsseldorf also stage enormous Rosenmontag parades, so they are common alternatives in quizzes. However, Cologne is conventionally identified as the largest, especially by the scale of its procession and the crowds it attracts. The German term Rosenmontagszug simply means the Rose Monday parade.
