Which genus contains the bold jumping spider?

The story behind the answer

The bold jumping spider belongs to the genus Phidippus.

The species commonly called the bold jumping spider or bold jumper is Phidippus audax. It is a member of Salticidae, the jumping-spider family, whose members hunt actively rather than relying on a web to capture prey. Phidippus is one of the larger and more conspicuous jumping-spider genera, and many species have iridescent green chelicerae.

Phidippus audax is native across much of North America and has also been introduced in places including Hawaii, the Azores, and the Netherlands. Its large forward-facing eyes help it judge distance and track prey. Instead of building a prey-catching web, it stalks insects by day, jumps, and anchors itself with a silk dragline.

The species name audax means “bold” or “audacious” in Latin. Nicholas Marcellus Hentz described the species in 1845, and the genus Phidippus was established by Carl Ludwig Koch in 1846. A common mix-up is confusing the genus with the family: Phidippus is the genus, while Salticidae is the broader family.
