Which general replaced Douglas MacArthur as UN forces commander in 1951?

Matthew Ridgway replaced Douglas MacArthur as UN forces commander in Korea in April 1951. President Harry Truman removed MacArthur after a public dispute over the scope of the war, especially MacArthur’s desire to widen operations against China.

Ridgway had already earned a reputation as an effective battlefield commander. He took over the U.S. Eighth Army after Lieutenant General Walton Walker died in December 1950 and helped restore its morale during the Chinese intervention. His leadership contributed to stopping the retreat and stabilizing the front near the 38th parallel.

As UN commander, Ridgway directed renewed counteroffensives and helped establish the conditions that eventually led to armistice negotiations. A common mix-up is James Van Fleet: Van Fleet replaced Ridgway as Eighth Army commander, but Ridgway himself succeeded MacArthur as the overall UN commander. General Mark Clark later succeeded Ridgway in 1952.
