Which game was the first Pokémon title released internationally?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Red and Blue were the first Pokémon games released internationally.

The original games launched in Japan as Pokémon Red and Green in 1996. For overseas markets, Nintendo released Pokémon Red and Blue, using Blue as the companion version instead of Japan’s Green. The international releases began in North America in 1998 and later reached Europe in 1999.

These Game Boy role-playing games introduced players outside Japan to the Kanto region, the original 151 Pokémon, and the central goal of collecting, training, and battling Pokémon. Red and Blue were paired versions with different wild Pokémon, encouraging trading between players.

Pokémon Yellow followed internationally in 1999 and changed the opening adventure to reflect the anime more closely, including Pikachu as the player’s initial partner. Pokémon Gold and Silver came later as the first internationally released Generation II games, so they cannot be the answer to this question.
