Pokémon Yellow introduced Pikachu as the player’s fixed starter Pokémon.
Released in Japan in 1998, Pokémon Yellow was an enhanced version of the first-generation games. It was designed to resemble the anime more closely, so the player begins with Pikachu rather than choosing Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle.
Pikachu refuses to remain inside its Poké Ball and follows the player on screen. The game also makes it possible to obtain the three original starter Pokémon during the adventure, connecting Yellow’s gameplay to the anime’s presentation of Ash and his companions.
Pokémon Red and Blue give players a choice among Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, so they are not the correct answer. Pokémon Yellow was later remade in spirit through Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! for Nintendo Switch, but that 2018 title is a separate game.
