Frostbite powered FIFA 17, making it the first FIFA title to use that engine.
FIFA 17 was released in 2016 and used Frostbite across the game’s major visual and presentation systems. The engine had previously been strongly associated with Electronic Arts’ first-person shooters, especially the Battlefield series, but EA expanded it into sports and other genres.
The move enabled more detailed stadium environments, lighting, player presentation and cinematic sequences. FIFA 17 also introduced The Journey, a story-driven mode centered on Alex Hunter, so the engine change was especially visible in scenes outside ordinary matches.
Earlier FIFA games used EA’s Ignite engine, including FIFA 14 on new-generation consoles and later releases. Frostbite did not mean every platform received identical technology: versions for some older systems had different features. Nevertheless, FIFA 17 is the recognized starting point for Frostbite in the main FIFA series.
