Frostbite powered FIFA 17 instead of the Ignite engine used by earlier FIFA games.
FIFA 17 was released in 2016 and marked the series’ move to EA’s Frostbite engine. Frostbite had already been used in several other EA franchises, and its adoption allowed FIFA 17 to support more detailed presentation, lighting, stadium environments, and cinematic scenes.
The engine change was particularly visible in The Journey, FIFA 17’s story-driven mode. That mode followed Alex Hunter as he pursued a professional football career, combining matches with dialogue scenes and branching decisions. Frostbite helped the game present those non-match sequences with a more cinematic style.
FIFA 17’s engine should not be confused with HyperMotion, which debuted much later in FIFA 22, or Ignite, which powered FIFA 14 through FIFA 16 on relevant platforms. The engine switch and the story mode were separate features, although both were major FIFA 17 developments.
