Which Game Boy feature inspired Pokémon’s concept of trading creatures between players?

The story behind the answer

The Game Link Cable inspired Pokémon’s concept of trading creatures between players.

Satoshi Tajiri saw that two Game Boy systems could communicate through the cable and imagined creatures moving between them. The idea connected his childhood hobby of insect collecting with a practical feature of Nintendo’s handheld hardware.

This connection became central to the original Pokémon games. Red and Green were released as paired versions with different Pokémon available in each, encouraging players to link systems, trade creatures, and cooperate to complete their Pokédex.

The cable did more than support competitive battles. It made collecting a social activity and gave players a reason to interact outside the single-player adventure. Wireless trading and online connectivity later replaced the physical cable, but the original design principle remained a foundation of the series.
