The Veneti lived in northwestern Gaul, in the area of modern Brittany, and were experienced Atlantic seafarers. They seized Roman officials who had been sent to obtain supplies, prompting Caesar to treat the incident as an act of war. The Veneti also built a coalition with neighbouring tribes and relied on strong coastal settlements that could be supplied or evacuated by sea.
Caesar ordered a fleet to be constructed on the Loire River and placed Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus in command. The Venetic ships were larger and sturdier than the Roman vessels, with high sides and leather sails suited to Atlantic conditions. Roman crews therefore avoided trying to ram them directly.
Instead, Roman sailors used hooked poles to cut the ropes supporting the Veneti’s sails. Once the ships were immobilized, Roman crews boarded them. The victory ended Venetic naval resistance, and Caesar later used the fleet in his expeditions to Britain. The punishment imposed on the defeated tribe was notably severe.
