Which frequency band does Wi-Fi 6E add to the existing Wi-Fi 6 capabilities?

The story behind the answer

Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz frequency band to the capabilities of Wi-Fi 6.

The “E” in Wi-Fi 6E means “extended.” Wi-Fi 6E devices use newly available spectrum from roughly 5.925 to 7.125 GHz, depending on national regulations. This creates additional channels for compatible routers and devices.

The 6 GHz band is less crowded than the older 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but its shorter wavelengths generally have more difficulty passing through walls. Wi-Fi 6E is therefore not simply a faster replacement for every Wi-Fi device; both the router and client must support it.

Wi-Fi 6E should not be confused with Wi-Fi 7, which is a later generation. The name describes an extension of Wi-Fi 6 into new spectrum, not a completely separate IEEE generation.
