Which French town was the site of the 1944 massacre in which German troops killed 642 civilians?

The story behind the answer

Oradour-sur-Glane was the French town where German troops killed 642 civilians on 10 June 1944.

The massacre occurred four days after the Allied landings in Normandy. Soldiers from the Waffen-SS Das Reich division surrounded the village in the Limousin region, separated men from women and children, and then murdered the men in several buildings. Women and children were trapped in the village church, which was set on fire; most were killed when they tried to escape or by the flames and gunfire.

The attackers burned the village and left the ruins largely untouched. After the war, French authorities preserved the destroyed town as a memorial rather than rebuilding it on the original site. A new Oradour-sur-Glane was constructed nearby.

Oradour is sometimes confused with Lidice in occupied Czechoslovakia, which German forces destroyed in 1942. Both were civilian massacres, but they occurred in different countries and years.
