Which French nobleman became a Continental Army major general and American Revolutionary hero?
Answer
Marquis de Lafayette
Answer
Marquis de Lafayette
The Marquis de Lafayette became a Continental Army major general and an American Revolutionary hero. Born Gilbert du Motier in France in 1757, he volunteered for the American cause while still a young aristocrat.
Lafayette arrived in the United States in 1777 and offered his services without demanding pay. Congress commissioned him as a major general, although he initially held an honorary position without command of a full division. He soon became a trusted associate of George Washington and took part in several campaigns.
Lafayette was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine in 1777 and later helped command American forces in Virginia. In 1781, he opposed British forces led by Charles Cornwallis before Washington’s allied army and French fleet trapped Cornwallis at Yorktown.
His importance extended beyond battlefield service. Lafayette supported the American cause in France, where French military and naval assistance was crucial. He later became an important figure in the French Revolution and remained closely associated with American independence. The title “Marquis” was a hereditary French noble title, not his personal first name.
