Which French neoclassical painter created "The Oath of the Horatii"?

The story behind the answer

Which French neoclassical painter created “The Oath of the Horatii”? Jacques-Louis David created it. He painted the monumental oil-on-canvas work in Rome in 1784–1785, and it is now displayed in the Louvre in Paris.

The scene comes from the Roman legend of the Horatii and Curiatii, in which three Roman brothers fight three brothers from Alba Longa to settle a conflict between their cities. David shows the Horatii swearing before their father, who holds their swords aloft. The composition emphasizes civic duty, discipline and sacrifice for the state.

The subject was based on accounts by the ancient writers Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus, but the oath-taking moment itself was David’s invention. The painting became a defining example of Neoclassicism because of its severe geometry, restrained color and debt to ancient Roman virtue. Viewers sometimes confuse it with David’s later revolutionary and Napoleonic works, but this painting predates the French Revolution by several years.
